Pediatric Physical Therapy

Two overlapping hearts representing family support and coordinated care

Movement looks different for every child. Physical therapy can support strength, balance and mobility, whether a goal involves sitting with support, changing positions or moving with an assistive device.

At Little Stars Pediatric Center, physical therapy can be coordinated with nursing care during the day, based on your child's needs and care plan.

Movement that supports participation

Strength and motor development

Therapy may work on head control, rolling, sitting, standing or other movements that support a child's daily activities. Goals begin with their current abilities.

Balance, coordination and walking

Activities may address balance and coordination or support gait training when appropriate. The aim is to help each child participate in ways that fit their needs.

Positioning and transfers

Supported positioning, range-of-motion exercises and transfer training can be part of a therapy plan. These skills may help with changing positions and taking part in daily routines.

Wheelchair mobility and assistive devices

Mobility is not limited to walking. Physical therapy may include wheelchair mobility and training with assistive devices, according to the child's assessment and goals.

Making room for movement

Play and everyday activities can create opportunities to practice movement. Therapy may use a child's interests to encourage participation while accounting for their medical needs, comfort and energy.

The therapy and nursing teams can coordinate around the care plan. Caregiver education can help families understand positioning and movement strategies recommended for their child.

Physical therapy during a day of care

Little Stars Pediatric Center is a Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care (PPEC/PPECC) center for children who need skilled nursing care during the day. Therapy can be coordinated within that setting, with opportunities for learning, play and social connection.

Our team can discuss your child's needs and services available at the center you are considering. Explore admission information.

Questions about physical therapy

  • Is physical therapy only for children learning to walk?

No. Goals may include supported sitting, positioning, transfers, wheelchair mobility or movement with an assistive device. The plan depends on the child's needs.

  • Can a child who uses a ventilator or has a tracheostomy be considered?

Little Stars Pediatric Center provides ventilator and tracheostomy care. Therapy would be considered with the child's medical team and care plan. Contact us to discuss what support may be appropriate.

  • How do physical and occupational therapy work together?

Physical therapy focuses on movement and mobility; occupational therapy focuses on participation in everyday activities. For some children, the goals support each other and are coordinated within their care plan.

  • Will every child work toward the same milestones?

No. Goals should reflect the individual child, their medical needs and what matters to them and their family. Progress does not look the same for everyone.
